Abstract


Growth of population in Pekanbaru is about 4% per year. It could be predicted that population will be more than 1 million in 2012. This condition causes growth of settlement and then gives a big effect to environment. Pekanbaru Kota District is an area which has the highest densely populated settlement in Pekanbaru. It is the smallest area in this town. The width is 2,26 km2 or 0,36% from the width of city. In 2004, this place was occupied by 30.129 people. It means that the average of population densely in this area is13.311 people per km2. This area has unique characteristic in its development. The place is downtown and center of all activities, especially in economic
Physically, many settlements in this place have exceeded capacity of environment. This condition can cause bad and unhealthy area. Aim of this research to identify condition of densely populated settlement and to know people perception about their environment.The identified condition in this settlement showed slum area and became unique because the people who live there do not care about their environment. Data taken from respondent showed that 61,19% people who lived in the house which have width less than 50 m2 felt comfortable with their environment. 62,79% people who have their own well felt satisfied about the clean water in their houses. People perception and this unique condition could be used as hint to make priority in settlement improvement.
